Meta and Nvidia Enter the Open-Weight Arena
In a significant shift in the AI landscape, Meta and Nvidia both released open-weight AI models this week, signaling a concerted effort by U.S. tech giants to compete with leading Chinese AI labs in the open-source space.
The move comes just weeks after a consortium of more than 20 U.S. tech companies signed an open letter urging policymakers to avoid “premature restrictions” on open-weight AI models, even if they originate from China. The letter, dated July 24, argued that open-weight AI “can expand opportunity, strengthen competition, extend American technological leadership, mitigate risk, and ensure that the benefits of this extraordinary technology are shared broadly across our economy.”
Meta’s Muse Glimmer and Nvidia’s Nemotron 3.5 Lightning
Meta on Monday unveiled Muse Glimmer as part of a strategy to release its most powerful AI models to the open-source community. CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the company would open the weights for its latest model, Muse Spark 1.2 — “weights” referring to the calculations and rules that determine how the AI works and behaves.
A day later, Nvidia debuted Nemotron 3.5 Lightning, stemming from the company’s Nemotron 3 family of models released in December. Nvidia emphasized that its models are “truly open source,” publishing the related training datasets, techniques, and model weights for developers to inspect.
Both models are smaller and intended to run on laptops for tasks like powering on-device digital agents, positioning them as accessible alternatives to the proprietary offerings from OpenAI and Anthropic.
Competing with Chinese Labs
The U.S. companies face stiff competition from Chinese AI labs including Moonshot AI, DeepSeek, and Alibaba’s Qwen series, which have gained significant traction in the open-weight community.

Levie added that companies put off by using Chinese open-weight models would be more inclined to experiment with Meta’s domestic alternative, especially in sensitive sectors like government agencies and large banks.
Meta’s Open-Source Track Record
Meta’s open-source journey has been rocky. The release of Llama 4 in April 2025 left developers unimpressed, prompting the company to spend billions overhauling its AI unit and installing Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang as the division’s leader. Wang’s group has since been rolling out proprietary models under the Muse branding to develop new revenue streams.
Umesh Sachdev, CEO of business AI startup Uniphore, noted that Meta burned bridges with third-party developers when it shifted from open-weight to proprietary models. “I think it’s going to take more than a 3,500-word article from Zuck to convince developers,” Sachdev said. “The emotion of my developers at Uniphore, they almost feel betrayed.”
However, Forrester analyst Charlie Dai called Meta’s latest move “strategically important because it restores a major U.S. frontier AI vendor to the open ecosystem,” adding that developers and enterprises will likely welcome the shift back toward open weights for the transparency, customization, and data sovereignty it provides.
